Oruxmaps and Rmaps are pretty useful. Work off and online. Make your own maps within the program or with Mobile Atlas Creator for PC and load the maps onto your Archos. Lots of features to play with. I prefer to make custom maps with the PC and load those onto the Archos for the above programs. Using the SQlite format and only produce two files for each map instead of 15k+ map tiles.
Also a huge selection on maps styles to download, where these other programs each have some that other don't and makes a headache to switch programs to get a SAT map instead of terrain, for instance. Others: BackCountryNavigator, gvSIG mini maps, MapDroyd, Maverik, Multimap. Yes but does the 5 pick up satellites? My 5 It Really has a job picking them up if it does so it takes ages, I am really disapointed with this device, it was bought to use sat-nav and music at the same time, and when the preloaded N-Drive would not work I ordered the in-car GPS mount from UK the DVD would not load and the supplied cable picked up the engine noise. I cannot get any sense or support from the Archos helpline/phone/web page and am really sorry I bought it.
But does copilot really work well? Is it worth the extra money as it seems I am stuck with this piece of junk! Sygic aura beta also works. I cannot provide a link but google is your friend.
Quantum fishing reels repair. It's the most responsive because it's hardware accelerated so animations are smooth and fast and it also downloads the maps from within the program. The really cool thing though is that you can select which states you want to download.
I am curious on which version you managed to run on the Archos.2.0 runs but it freezes after 40 minutes with my setup. 2.1 is not compatible with donut.
Is there a way of testing Copilot without paying for it? I use to work on GPS application for the automotive industry and I like to try before I buy. So far I tested Sygic Mobile map which I found good but it is not possible to purchase it anymore. Ndrive 9, very poorly executed re-routing algorithm slow, gps fix very slow and hangs up a lot and lots of place missing on their map (which are not on model made 5 years before). Sygic Aura 2.0, to me it not as good as Mobile Map see above.
And I would like to give Copilot a try. I am talking only Archos 5IT Navigation SW there. I use N Drive with Napster and FM transmitter every day at work for a year and I love it! I do a lot of driving and needed a GPS and Music player and FM transmitter all in one.
This fits my needs great, but is glitchy! It takes a few min sometimes for the GPS to lock on, and you almost allways have to be stoped to get a lock, otherwise its taken as much as 20min to get a lock while driving.
I just start N Drive first thing in the morning before i have to be anyware. It also used to lock up on me at least once daily, and wold have to restart the Archos, which is no problem becuase the N Drive will resume your previous Navigation when restarted but you may have trouble getting the GPS to lock while driving. Ive tried everything from re booting and re installing the Archos, to force closing all aps before using N Drive, none of that helped.
I just recently started turning off the Wi-Fi when i got in the van. This has made a huge difference!!! A week and a half strait and i haven't had to restart the Archos!!! I think the GPS is working better too. Try turning off WiFi when using the GPS.
I use Copilot 8 daily and have had very few problems. Usually don't bother with the FM transmitter as I like to listen to the radio when driving but when I have used it works just fine as well. Locking onto GPS takes around 5 minutes so I tend to start up Copilot before I leave the house. It froze once a couple of times a long time ago after using it for over two hours at a time - I read somewhere to turn of the WiFi which seemed to solve the problem.
My Archos 5 is the 8Gb flash drive model, I have heard of problems from those with the hard dives with getting reception. Hope that helps. I have both NDrive and CoPilot (i received a free license for NDrive, and CoPilot was only $5 at one point on Google Marketplace). While I probably would like CoPilot better, it tends to freeze a lot during navigation, and the only remedy is to reboot the Archos.
It does not happen with NDrive. Not sure if this is an Archos problem or a CoPilot problem or if others have experienced this. I'll try turning off the WiFi to see if that helps. I used NDrive to drive from TX to NJ and back, and it only froze once on I95 under the Fort McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore, MD. FM transmitter works well on both Apps.
Without it on, it's really hard to hear the voice coming out of those tiny Archos speakers. As for the getting that first GPS signal, I find NDrive connects better when you're in the screen that you can see the signal strengths. Also, you might want to run the gps diag app first, then the GPS app. And once it is locked on, it stays locked on.
Like most people here, you don't say which model of A5IT you have. You should search the forum for the many threads on this topic. The consensus is that the GPS in the SSD models greatly outperforms that in the HDD models. This is anecdotal of course, but compelling anyway.
My own experience comforms to this view. I get a lock, outside, with my A5IT 32GB SSD models in about 20 seconds, here in the UK. It takes about 3 to 5 minutes to get a lock indoors. My 160GB HDD model takes 2 to 3 minutes to get a lock outdoors, I don't bother trying indoors - no need for it anyway. Once locked, they all maintain that lock with no difficulty here in the UK. My A5IT 32GB SSD models with Copilot are the nearest thing to a dedicated SatNav I've found.
I also have NDrive on two of my devices, and it works ok, but it's a bit primitive compared to Copilot. It's also 'frozen' in time, version-wise, and too expensive for what it is.
